This charming cottage stands in the grounds of what was once a small 'secret' orthodox church, where, during the Turkish occupation in the 14th century, the Turks forbade the practicing of Christianity and the learning of language amongst the Cretan people. For this entire period of occupation, Religious rites and the teaching of the Greek language were practiced in secret, in churches such as this. During the excavation of the original site, icons and a large iron Christian cross wrapped in cloth, were discovered within a wall and it is believed that the original church, dedicated to the Prophet Eli, was constructed long before even the Venetian period. The church was eventually burnt to the ground by the Turks, and in 1950, a smaller church dedicated to Prophis Elias, was constructed and now stands only metres away from Clio Cottage Clio Cottage stands in a picturesque Cretan village 10 minutes walk from the sandy beaches of Elounda.
