It is situated 20km from the city of Chanią, 25km from its airport and 4km from Plataniąs, the most cosmopolitan holiday resort in the entire prefecture. The area used to be called "Caneva" during the Turkish occupation. Later some locals named it Tavronitis after its impetuous river dashing through the village and sweeping everything along its path.
