Margareta traditional cottage was built in 1840 by the family who gave this delightful village its name. This was in the time of the Turkish occupation of the main village of Elounda, when the Cretan citizens where forbidden to live on the coast and settled inland.
After a love affair with the eldest son of the family and the Pashas favorite woman, the family were forced to flee East and the house fell into the hands of Turkish officials until the beginning of the 20th century.
Rebuilt in the 1960's with great care and attention to restore the house to its original design, Margarita cottage can accommodate up to 6 persons.
Upon entering through the courtyard there is a small fully equipped kitchen and a bathroom. The ground floor consists of a sitting room with stone fireplace, with dining area and up a few steps to the first double bedroom. On the next floor a bedroom with twin beds, and on the third floor the third bedroom has twin beds and doors leading onto the large terrace with an outdoor summer kitchen and dining area with panoramic views of the Bay of Elounda and mountains beyond. The house also has air conditioning.
The village is a 10 min walk from the beach and into the picturesque fishing town of Elounda which has many traditional tavernas and shops. A beautifully restored Cretan cottage with a rich history and many original features and set in an untouched traditional Cretan village.
