The Apokoronas region
The district of Apokoronas is in the north-eastern corner of the Chania region at the foot of the White Mountains, one of the greenest regions of Crete. Apokoronas contains some interesting sights, such as Lake Kournas, the island's only freshwater lake, gorges including the stunning Samaria gorge, picturesque villages and small beach resorts.
Gavalohori village
Gavalohori is still very much a traditional Cretan village, though now with facilities for self catering holidays, right through the year. It is now very easy to take a lazy holiday cycling or just walking around with no need for a car. 5 minutes stroll from the houses is APOSPERITIS Taverna . The best food in Apokoronas & exceptional value. Bring your friends or you won’t be able to finish your dinner! With a varied traditional menu, everything is cooked to order. Great for vegetarians too. Opens May to October 6.30 pm until very late. Open for lunch Sundays & (Greek) bank holidays. Walking on a few metres you will see H POIOLIS General store, the first shop on the right before the village square. Selling general groceries including fruit, vegetables, wine, frozen meat & fish, this shop is open 7.30 am ‘till 10 pm. every day of the year. Right in the square is GAVALOHORI KAFENES. This café/snack bar has been very nicely renovated and is open 9 am ‘til late every day. Opposite GAVALOHORI KAFENES is the village bakery, a few yards up a little side street. They are open 9 am - 2 pm & 5 pm - 8 pm every day. Very nice brown bread, spinach pies, and sometimes chocolate croissants. On the other side of the square is the GAVALOHORI WOMEN’S CO-OPERATIVE. This co-operative is run by 30 ladies from the village & sells all kinds of local products, particularly lace which is hand made from silk from their own silk worms. They also have herbs and wild teas from Crete, locally produced olive oil, and ‘spoon sweets’ in jars. They have an ice cream fridge and cold drinks. The co-operative acts as an informal kafeneion for the old men of the village who sit along the street, opposite the real kafeneion. Open March to November 9.30 am - 10 pm. A wonderful place for authentic gifts. At the end of the square there is another mini market which has general groceries, fruit, wine etc and also flip flops, beach accessories and film. SUPERMARKET FRONIMOS is open 7am - 10pm every day. Turn left as you enter the square and after about 100 metres, beyond a small square with a plain tree, is the folk museum (on the right). Open April to October 9am – 7pm Monday to Saturday, Sunday 9am – 1 pm 5 pm – 8pm. Entrance 2 Euro. Keep walking past the red domed church, bearing left up hill you will pass the old village school. This is owned by the Gavalohori cultural society and is the venue for some music evenings in the summer. Continuing left down hill you will reach the road – turn left and in a few metres you will be back at the house! Crete offers culture and history, bustling cities with nightlife and shopping, beautiful beaches, friendly villages, trekking, countryside and mountain walks.
Western Crete
Chania The second city in Crete, Chania is a modern commercial city with its roots deep in the past. The old town is an archaeological wonderland with architecturally unique buildings reflecting a history of foreign domination; Venetian, Turkish as well as Cretan. There are two harbours which are packed with restaurants and shops. You can take a boat trip, visit the nautical museum, or just wander around the narrow back streets. The Agora market has fish, meat, bakers and fruit stalls. The Saturday street market which runs down towards the sea, close to the Agora is the best place to find produce straight from the fields. Aptera The ruins of ancient Aptera are located on a hill above the bay of Souda. Founded in the 7th century BC, Aptera was one of the largest city states in Crete and was continuously inhabited until an earthquake destroyed it in the 7th century AD. A monastery was established there in the 12th century. Most of this very large site has is still to be excavated but you can see impressive Roman cisterns, a Greek temple, various other buildings and massive defensive walls. Walking/Gorges The famous Samaria gorge is just to the south and there are also many more peaceful gorges such as Imbros Gorge, which runs parallel to Samaria. The Apokoronas area is wonderful for walking & cycling, especially in the Spring & Autumn. We have written out some circular walks and cycling routes from the houses. The Winter is very short in West Crete – by February the almond trees are blossoming, and from then on new wild flowers appear every day. In March, April, and May the sky is a beautiful deep blue, birds sing their hearts out and snowy peaks of The White Mountains are truly spectacular. October is always gorgeous, sunny & warm, quiet beaches and wonderful for walking. Crete is the largest of the Greek islands and the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean. It is 256km long and between 15km and 70km wide. The inland terrain is mountainous with high fertile plateaux split by spectacular gorges, ideal for walking and photography. Along the north coast, sandy beaches stretch virtually the length of the island. Other local activities include cycling, birdwatching, horseriding and painting. The climate is Mediterranean, being mostly warm and sunny between May & October.

Reviews
Steve says: "Perfectly restored stone village house with a modern but still traditional feeling. Located on the outskirts of this lovely little village it provided a quiet restful haven just 5 mins walk from the village centre. Excellent hosts who could not do enough for you. Could not be faulted in any way. Perfect."
