Island Description: Madeira is a lush, subtropical island 400 miles off the North West coast of Africa. A multitude of exotic flowers thrive here. It is actually an extinct volcano with stunning natural scenery. Deep gorges make their way down to the steep and rocky coast. Green valleys and hillside terraces produce sugar cane, bananas and grapes for the famous Madeira wines. The island has no sandy beaches but you can swim in rocky pools or Funchal's excellent Lido. The clear blue sea is ideal for scuba diving and deep-sea fishing. The island has a few sandy beaches but are predominantly pebble.
