Granada is the nearest being about an hour and a half away, whilst the others are about 2 hours. Roads from the airports are excellent and are virtually deserted once you get en route. Ever since the Moorish times, the Andalucians have been fond of living underground as it is the best way of escaping the intense heat of the summer. Cave houses have a natural ambience and keep a year round temperature of 18-20 degrees making them cool in the summer and requiring very little heating in the winter. Most cave houses today are a far cry from their humble beginnings and some are even quite luxurious, boasting marble floors, modern fitted kitchens and satellite Broadband connections! The province of Granada has many cave villages which still house local people, but many caves are now being bought by foreigners as holiday homes as the prices here are much lower than on the coast.
