If you are looking for a wheelchair accessible holiday villa in Orlando with access for the disabled (handicapped), then you have found an ideal place to stay.
Our luxurious, wheelchair accessible holiday villa is situated in the new and exclusive gated community of The Abbey, West Haven, Orlando, Florida. We are ideally located just a few miles from all of Orlando's main attractions. It also has excellent facilities should you simply wish to relax in Florida's year round sunshine. So whether you are here for the Theme Parks, attractions, or relaxation, you've found an ideal base for your vacation here in Florida. The villa accommodation is ideal if you are disabled (handicapped), elderly or infirm in any way; there is flat access throughout and no steps to worry about.
We chose our villa for its location but also for its privacy. The villa is set in a nature conservation area and backs on to orange groves, ensuring that it is not overlooked, unlike many other rental villas.
The communal areas of The Abbey development have been beautifully landscaped and the 'sidewalks' have been finished in block paving. Victorian style street lamps complete the feeling of style.
Our wheelchair accessible villa is very spacious and comprises a master double bedded room with en-suite bath and wheel-in shower room, second double bedded room with en-suite bath/shower room, 2 twin bedded rooms (one decorated in a Mickey Mouse theme), bathroom with bath/shower, kitchen, dining area (table seats 8), breakfast bar with stools, living area, utility room, double garage, covered lanai (porch), pool bathroom and heated, screened pool with hoist.
There are many villas in the region which have been supposedly designed for the disabled, but not by a wheelchair user or someone with a disability (handicap).
Being a full time wheelchair user myself, I discussed what features I required with the builder before the villa was built. I have paid particular attention to make the whole villa suitable for the disabled (handicapped) i.e. wheelchair users and those with walking difficulties. Most doors are 36'' wide, there is a wheel-in shower (with built in shower seat and hand held shower) and accessible bath in the master en-suite bathroom. The second en-suite bathroom and other bathroom are also wheelchair accessible. There is level access at the front door, out to the covered lanai/pool deck and from the garage. The electrically operated garage door also has a remote control opener. The whole of the pool deck is wheelchair accessible. And it is also possible to get under the dining table, kitchen sink and bathroom sink! As you can imagine it is wheelchair friendly. It is also suitable for those with walking difficulties and who are handicapped.
I know from personal experience that accessible accommodation is difficult to find, so I'm sure that the villa will meet most people's needs without being too clinical.
Our villa has its own private screened and heated pool. There is a pool hoist in the centre of the deck, adjacent to the steps, giving easy access to the pool.

Other Details: Orlando is the first city of Central Florida. It is noted for its year round good weather and excellent transport and communication links. This area is particularly accessible for the disabled (handicapped), be it for the full time wheelchair user or those with walking difficulties or any handicap. The theme parks even have separate queues for wheelchair users!
Orlando is famous for Walt Disneys World Resort, the worlds biggest tourist destination, attracting millions of visitors every year. There are numerous other attractions such as Universal Studios, SeaWorld, etc.
However, it is surprisingly easy to find peace and quiet in the many state parks, botanical gardens, historical and science museums, art galleries, water parks and peaceful suburbs. Lake Eola has a remarkable fountain. Kissimmees Lake Tohopekaliga has amazing birdlife. Church Street Station Complex in downtown Orlando offers shopping, restaurants, music, entertainment, etc. Fancy a quiet stroll? Try Harry P Leu Gardens; 56 acres of lush gardens in the centre of Orlando, with a restored turn-of-the-twentieth-century farmhouse. Orlando science centre is crowned by an observatory and features laser shows and planetarium presentations.
Orlando is also within easy reach of the gulf (west) and east coast beaches. The not-to-be-missed Cypress gardens is a short drive south. North of Orlando lies lush countryside, stud farms and areas untouched by tourism. Try Mount Dora, on the shores of Lake Dora, 20 miles north-east of Orlando for Old Florida. An hours drive north-west of Orlando is Ocala. Numerous stud farms are found here as well as Silver Springs (Floridas original theme park). This has the largest number of artesian wells in the world.
Florida has national forests, national parks and national wildlife refuges containing numerous land and sea animals. Youll be amazed by the number of places you can escape to within one hours drive of the villa. There are various airboat and boat tour companies which will take wheelchairs; so if you wish to be adventurous, go to the places where you can see natural Florida at its best.
We have discovered numerous activities for the disabled (handicapped) holiday maker in the Orlando region of Florida. Fancy scuba diving? We know of companies who can arrange this. Fishing on inland lakes or on the sea can also be tried. The Americans have made so many activities available to the disabled (handicapped) in Orlando, it puts the UK to shame. So whether you have a handicap or walking difficulties, you will be able to participate in numerous activities.
