Staying Healthy When You Travel
Imagine falling sick on a trip you’ve so much looked forward to. You’ve worked hard for long and decided it was time to take a well deserved and needed break. So, you make all the plans and arrangements… Then, suddenly you fall sick just on the eve of your travel date or right when you arrive at your holiday destination. Now, that can be a nightmare!
Of course, that can get anyone really frustrated. But that’s not just because you’ll have to cancel your plans and miss out on a vacation you’ve been looking forward to. It’s mostly because falling ill on the journey can cost you a lot of money, especially if you have to seek medical care in a strange place and outside of your health insurance.
However, observing these helpful tips can help you avoid falling ill before or during a trip.
- Get enough rest
Having enough rest cannot be overemphasized. “The less rest you have, the longer it will take you to get better,” says Sarah Jones of Giftedhealthcare. Your body needs a minimum of 7 to 8 hours of sleep or non-conscious activity before it is well rested.
If your body gets tired, it won’t be able to fight whatever is wrong with you. Of course, it can be disappointing having to miss out on the sightseeing or hanging out with friends, but your body will surely appreciate it. So make sure to get enough of rest and you can get back on your feet quickly again.
- Stay hydrated
Staying hydrated on the road is your best defense against diseases. Travelling can make you more active than you will normally be at home. Even if you consistently drink water when you are in your house, you might fall out of the routine when you are on the road.
Before you leave on excursions, drink enough water; also carry along a bottle or two, in case you can’t find any along the way. Remember that fever, vomiting and diarrhea can cause dehydration; so you need enough water to keep your body functioning properly. It also helps to flush toxins out your system. So drink enough of clean water. If you can, make Pedialyte and coconut water a part of your liquid intake.
- Boost your immunity
An increase in vitamin C will help your body build immunity and strengthen your body defenses. When packing for your trip, don’t forget to pack your vitamin C supplements along. Get yourself some Energen-C for enough Vitamin C. And when you arrive at your destination, drink a lot of fresh orange juice. Oranges are a natural source of vitamin
The airplane cabin can be so dry; it can dry out your mucus membranes. Saline solution and nasal mists will keep your nasal passage moist and free, which will aid you flush germs better. If you don’t have any handy, but you have some petroleum jelly or Neosporin, apply a bit just inside your nostrils. This creates a natural barrier between you and the free flying germs.
- Drink only water you trust
You must have heard stories of travelers who fell sick from drinking the local water while travelling in foreign countries. One vital rule of travelling in foreign countries according to gifted health care is: Don’t drink the tap water.
There are two reasons for this warning. The water could be contaminated; you don’t know the source of the water or the process it went through before coming out that tap. Also, your body has local bacteria that could react even if the water is not contaminated. This happens because your body system is not used to the water and rejects it.
Keep healthy by drinking only water you trust, drink only sealed bottled water which is sufficiently filtered. You can use the local tap water for bathing and washing, but keep a bottle close by to brush your teeth with. Even though very cold temperature can kill some germs, avoid getting ice in your drinks if you can.
- Protect yourself
Bacteria and germs stick to surfaces, objects and even other people’s hands. Pack a couple of hand sanitizers when leaving on your trip, this can come in handy when you cannot get close to a sink to wash your hands. That being said, endeavors to wash your hands after any form of contact, wash with soap and a lot of water.
Don’t hesitate to wipe down airplane arm rest, tables, surfaces or anywhere you will be staying. It’s your space, make it how you want. I am certain it means no disrespect when you try to protect yourself from other people’s illnesses. Stay away from sick people so that you don’t get infected. You can care for your friends that fall sick, but make sure you take adequate protection; there is no joy in sharing illnesses.
If you travel to a place with a lot of smog or dust in the air, get a face mask. A mask can protect you from allergens, bacteria, dust and germs. You might feel a bit strange wearing one, but who cares, right? It’s for your own health and safety.
- See a doctor
If you fall sick on a trip, look for a qualified doctor. Self medication or over the counter prescriptions is not the right way to go. Medications from a doctor will help you feel better faster when you are in a strange place and find yourself under the weather.
Any symptom that lasts more than a few days can be a sign of something more serious and you wouldn’t want to put your life and the life of your fellow travelers in danger. Don’t hesitate to ask anyone for directions or help to getting a good doctor, but use your good judgment to decide if you can put your life in his or her hands.
These suggestions can help you avoid the inconvenience of falling sick in a strange place. But if before your journey you find yourself having symptoms of any illness and you feel you might not be able to cope, then call off or postpone the trip. There is no shame or embarrassment in falling ill or taking care of yourself. After all, there will be more trips and more opportunities to travel when you are better.
